19 May 1651. The Cossacks of Filon Dzherzhaliy stood at the gates of Panivtsi Castle after a failed assault on Kamianets.
A Pole named Trzylatkovsky opened the gate for them — in exchange for a promise of the rank of Cossack colonel.
The Cossacks entered.
Trzylatkovsky was hanged immediately — for betraying his own.

The Calvinist and His Academy
Jan Potocki — Bracław voivode and Kamianets starost — built the castle in the 1580s on a promontory between three arms of the Smotrych. He chose the site perfectly: natural protection on three sides.
But he built more than just a fortress.
Jan Potocki was a Calvinist — a rarity among the Polish nobility, who were predominantly Catholic. At the castle he founded a Calvinist printing house and a school with an academy. In the 16th century Panivtsi became one of the centres of the Reformation movement in Podilia.
Jan Potocki died heroically at the Battle of Smolensk. His Catholic wife, Wiktoria Kamieniecka, buried her husband’s remains in the castle chapel.
The castle passed to his nephew — Stanisław “Rewera” Potocki. He had no interest in scholarship. He closed the academy and the printing house. And put horse stables in their place.
Two different fates for one castle within a single generation.

The Turks Twice, and the Traitor of 1651
1621 — Sultan Osman II, angered by the failed Battle of Khotyn, sent a raiding force into Podilia. Panivtsi Castle held firm.
1633 — another Turkish siege. It held again.
1651 — Cossack forces of the Khmelnytsky Uprising under Colonel Filon Dzherzhaliy approached after a failed assault on Kamianets. The castle was surrounded. Trzylatkovsky opened the gate in exchange for a promised rank — and the Cossacks hanged him. The castle was taken.
After that — gradual decline.
Napoleon Orda and the Recorded Beauty
In the 1860s the travelling artist Napoleon Orda painted Panivtsi Castle for his album — the same album in which he recorded Novomalinskyi Castle and hundreds of other monuments.
Thanks to him we know what the castle looked like in its state of decline, before its final ruin.
The Ghost Bridge: Giant Piers Without an Arch
A ten-minute walk from the castle stands an unfinished railway bridge over the Smotrych canyon.
Construction began, the piers rose — massive stone columns above the gorge. But the arch between them was never built. The railway took a different route. The piers stand above the canyon, dozens of feet tall, and lead nowhere.
Two abandoned structures side by side: a castle where stables replaced an academy, and a bridge where a train will never run.
What Survives Today
Ruins of the castle above the Smotrych. Remnants of the castle palace on the north side between two towers. The trace of the chapel (where Jan Potocki was buried). Moats and the outlines of the fortifications. Separately — the remains of the Calvinist kirche and collegium.
The Smotrych canyon surrounding the site is itself a natural heritage monument.
What Not to Expect
Panivtsi is not a stand-alone tourist destination. It is an extension of Kamianets — just 4 miles (7 km) away. No infrastructure, no museum.
But if you are already in Kamianets — it is essential. The castle, the kirche, the ghost bridge and the canyon make for a complete excursion.
How to Include It in a Route
Panivtsi — 4 miles (7 km) from Kamianets-Podilskyi, Khmelnytskyi district.
- Kamianets-Podilska Fortress — 11 towers, the Smotrych canyon, the main point of the route
- Medzhybizh (~30 miles / ~50 km) — the Senyavsky castle
- Skala-Podilska (~25 miles / ~40 km) — the castle above the Zbruch
The “Road Trip through the Fortresses of Podilia” route — Panivtsi as an extension of a Kamianets day.

Conclusion
A Calvinist founded an academy. His nephew put in stables.
A traitor was promised a colonelcy and was hanged.
Napoleon Orda painted the ruins.
Nearby stand the piers of a bridge with no arch.
Both the castle and the bridge are unfinished in some sense.
