Three Lakes — Not One
The main misunderstanding: the name “Blue Lake” is in the singular, but there are three lakes.
The first — the largest and most popular. About 0.6 miles (1 km) long, 330–985 ft (100–300 m) wide. Depth reaches 26 ft (8 m), occasionally 49 ft (15 m). The surface water warms up, but deep down it stays a constant ~+45°F (~+7°C). This is where people swim.
The second — small, silted, with reed-covered banks. Not suitable for swimming. Excellent for fishing.
The third — smaller than the first, but has its own white sandy beach.
All three are flooded sand quarries, close to one another, in a pine forest.
Why the Water Is This Colour
The standard answer — “sandy bottom and groundwater” — is incomplete. There is a hypothesis that during sand extraction they dug down to a clay layer at the base of the quarry. This clay, combined with clear groundwater, produces the characteristic turquoise-blue tint. The same effect as in mountain lakes — but here there are no mountains, only the Poltava plain.
What Not to Expect
This is not a quiet place for solitary relaxation. A few years ago the “blue lakes” were a little-known location. Now there is an improvised beach here where many people spend weekends in summer. And unfortunately, litter on the approach paths.
If you are coming for quiet — early on a weekday is best.

The road to the lakes starts from the village of Sobkivka (Kuntsivsʼka village council, Novosanzhary district), but the lakes themselves administratively belong to the Nekhvoroshchynska village council. This detail occasionally matters when looking for local authority contacts.

Novosanzhary district is not the richest tourist region, but on the road from Poltava there is:
- Poltava (~25 miles / ~40 km) — museums, Kotlyarevsky estate, Ivanova Hora
- Novi Sanzhary (~9 miles / ~15 km) — district centre
The lakes fit naturally into the “Turquoise Quarries of Ukraine” route — together with Chykalivsky quarry (~50 miles / ~80 km) and Druzhbivsky (~90 miles / ~150 km) they form a natural chain.
